Over-50s Walking Football Tournament a Success

The AFA Walking Football Representative side took part in a tournament organised by our friends at Middlesex FA at the Powerleague Barnet last week in aid of the Bobby Moore Fund.

The squad, Roy Bertauche (East Barnet Old Grammarians) Ian Meyrick, Bill Martindale (Old Stationers) Bob Leeds (Old Finchleians) Michael Gibbons, Gerald Derry (Old Salvatorians) Alan Powell and Dave Harvey (Old Meadonians) played in the sweltering heat and managed to win four out of five matches!

Captain Dave Harvey, who last skippered the AFA against the Army 28 years ago and is a regular player for the Uxbridge Amblers, managed to pass on some vital top tips to his team mates.

Ex Watford FC and England star Luther Blissett came along to cheer the teams on and is pictured with the team.

Roy Bertauche said: “It was a lot more tiring than I thought it would be, but great fun.”

Ian Meyrick added: “Most of my team mates felt that I played Walking Football throughout my playing days so it was easy to adapt!”

Such was the success of the day, we intend on running an AFA Walking Football Tournament early next year. If you are interested, please contact Bob Leeds at the AFA office on Bob.Leeds@Amateur-FA.com
