Annual Registration

    •
Referees must re-register with their parent county annually in order to remain as qualified referees. The registration year runs from the 1st of June to the 31st of May each year.

Annual Registration

We send out registration reminders to all AFA registered referees in March or April each year to allow plenty of time to re-register. You can register online and amend your personal details as necessary when you do so. You will be registered as soon as you complete the online process.

There are further details of the online service below or to go straight to the Whole Game System login page which gives access to online registration please click  here

What Does It Cost?

The FA sets the annual registration fee for all referees. It is currently £20.

When Do I Have To Do It ?

You need to register before 1st June each year. If you miss the deadline you may have to pay a late registration fee of £10.

What If I’ve Just Completed the Basic Training Course?

New referees are automatically registered by the County for one year and the cost is included in the cost of the basic referees’ training course.

Will I need a new CRC ?

When you register you will be asked whether you intend to referee in youth football. If you do and you are 16 years old or older you will need a CRC dated within the last 3 years.

If you do not intend to referee in youth football but later change your mind it is most important that you contact your parent County (The AFA for AFA refeees) immediately and we will make arrangements with you to update your CRC if necessary.

What if I haven’t registered in recent seasons ?

If you were previously qualified but have not registered in one or more previous seasons we will be very pleased to help you back into refereeing. Please contact John Monk (Email: john.monk@amateur-fa.com )

Registering As An Associate

Non-AFA-parent county referees can always register with the AFA as an Associate but you need to register with your parent county first. Associates are eligible for appointments to AFA County Cup matches and you will receive all the communications that AFA parent County referees receive including newsletters and invitations to training sessions and other events.

Similarly, AFA referees can register as Associates with other local County FAs at no cost. You can do this when you register online by completing the section ‘Request to Join Associate County’.

What If I Don’t Register ?

If you do not register, you will not be able to be appointed to matches by any competition affiliated to the FA or the County FAs. You would not be covered by the County’s public liability insurance and there would be no chance of receiving County Cup Final or Representative Match appointments.

There would also be no opportunity for promotion, no communications from your County FA (newsletters and invitations to training and other events), you would not receive any information on updates/amendments to the Laws of the Game annually and you would not receive a County handbook. Your details will not appear in the County handbook.

After two years being unregistered, you would have to take the exams again if you wanted to re-register and after 5 years you would have to take the whole course again.

As an unregistered referee, you would only be able to referee as a “club referee” and be appointed to games by a home club if no registered referee is appointed by a competition. Naturally, this would limit where you could referee and the level of game you would be offered.

Online Registration

You can register online via the "Whole Game System" (‘WGS’). Through WGS you can update your personal details and manage your record as a referee. Among other things you can renew your referees registration, pay the registration fee and order AFA products such as badges, ties and copies of the Laws of the Game.

In order to register online for the new season you must have:

  • registered within the last two seasons.
  • completed the necessary safeguarding children requirements.
  • have a debit or credit card.

You do not need to fill out a form in hard copy and post it to the AFA.

You access WGS using your FAN number and password. For referee registration, once you have logged in, on the first page click on the 'Referee Administration' tab then select 'Start Referee Re-registration for 2016-17'. Accept the pop up message which appears about CRC checks and follow the instructions from there.

To access WGS simply click  here.
