The Coaches Network Presents an Evening With Tony Carr

Four Decades of Youth Development: An Evening With Tony Carr MBE

Join The Coaches Network for a live evening with Tony Carr as he talks through his career and development as a coach

Join The Coaches Network, in partnership with Amateur FA, London FA and Middlesex FA for their first live event, as we are joined by special guest Tony Carr, former  Director of Youth Football at West Ham United.

Tony Carr is one of the most influential coaches of all time. Having achieved his boyhood dream of signing with West Ham United in 1966 and training alongside the inimitable Bobby Moore, a leg break forced Carr to end his playing career before it had even begun. Not to be deterred, he decided to forge himself a new path and was appointed director of youth football at West Ham in 1973, aged just 23. Here's what former West Ham players have to say about Tony.

“A man who had such a huge impact on my career and so many other young players at West Ham United.”

 Frank Lampard Jr

“This man passed on the West Ham DNA to the best generation of academy graduates to come through the West Ham system.”
Rio Ferdinand

In this live discussion in partnership with The Coaches Network Podcast, we will explore the insights from over four decades of youth development with West Ham United and the challenges that can arise along the way in developing an effective youth development programme including the following:

  • Developing a seasonal programme of training
  • Supporting individuals in the wider group context
  • How to keep things fresh and engaging over time
  • What are the fundamentals in planning for seasonal and Long Term Player Development?

We will explore these areas through an interview style discussion, followed by an opportunity for Q&A with our host and Tony Carr in order to give you some food for thought to support you throughout the season, with some hints, tips and ideas for you to take away and try out with your own players.
